Limmatquai, Pedestrian zone along Limmat River in Zurich, Switzerland.
Limmatquai is a car-free street stretching about one kilometer through downtown Zurich along the right bank of Limmat River. It runs from Bellevueplatz to Central plaza and features historic guild houses and the Rathaus, where city and cantonal assemblies meet.
Houses were first built directly on the riverbanks starting in the 12th century, with residents taking advantage of the location for trade and craftwork. The modern street layout and infrastructure developed during the 19th century and continues to shape the area today.
Guild houses line the street and reflect the craft traditions that shaped Zurich's economy and society for generations. These buildings served as meeting places where craftspeople organized their trades and influenced city decisions.
Trams 2, 4, and 15 provide easy access throughout the street with regular stops along the route. The entire area is open to the public at any time and requires no entry fees or reservations.
The Riviera project is transforming the waterfront area between Utoquai and Limmatquai with new trees and redesigned spaces. This ongoing renewal shows how Zurich is rethinking its riverside for residents and visitors alike.
