Brunnenturm, Fortified tower in Old Town Zürich, Switzerland
Brunnenturm is a fortified tower with a square base and tent-shaped roof standing in Zurich's Old Town. The building now houses a parent education center and daycare facility run by the city's school department.
Built around 1250, the structure was long held by the Escher family and survived the centuries. It eventually earned recognition as a regional Swiss cultural heritage site.
The tower gets its name from a fountain that once stood in front of it and shaped the square's character. Today visitors can read the story of medieval Zurich written in its stones.
The tower sits at Obere Zaeune 26 near Napfplatz and is easy to find from the Old Town. Its location in a residential neighborhood makes it pleasant to visit at any time of day.
The structure once housed a tavern and served as a gathering place for nearby neighborhoods. For centuries the fountain in front shaped how people saw and used the square.
