Île aux Oiseaux, island on Lake Geneva
The île aux Oiseaux is an artificial island in Lake Geneva near Préverenges, created in 2001 as a resting place for migratory birds. It is made of rocks and sand with two wooden nesting platforms on stilts that protect birds from predators.
The island was established in 2001 by the Lausanne Ornithological Circle with support from Pro Natura Vaud to provide migrating birds with a peaceful resting place. In its first year, over 2000 birds from 28 different species were recorded.
The island serves as a stopping point for bird watchers and those interested in migration patterns. Visitors come to observe the movement of species and experience a place dedicated to nature conservation and public education about local wildlife.
The island is best viewed with binoculars or spotting scopes from a lakeside path. Two free spotting scopes are available, with one wheelchair accessible, and an information center provides background information.
During spring and summer months, passing birds like the Wood Sandpiper use the island as a crucial stop on their long journey. The island demonstrates how a relatively young habitat quickly became essential to the region's migratory bird infrastructure.
