Domaine de la Malvande

Domaine de la Malvande, Historic château in Pregny-Chambésy, Switzerland.

Description

The Domaine de la Malvande stands as a Louis XIII-style château covering approximately 33,378 square meters with red brick facades accented by pink-grain Saint-Gall sandstone and Scottish granite columns, offering panoramic views of Lake Geneva and surrounding mountain ranges through its carefully preserved terraced gardens.

History

The estate's documented history begins in 1723 when Jacob Chouet sold the property to Jean-Louis Chouet, and after passing through multiple owners including renowned watchmaker Henri-Louis Jaquet-Droz in 1788, it was reconstructed in its current Louis XIII architectural style between 1881-1883 under Adolphe Perrot's commission with architect Jacques-Elysée Goss.

Culture

Recognized as a cultural heritage site of national importance by the Swiss government since 1987 and inscribed in Geneva's inventory of significant historic buildings since 2017, the château represents the refined lifestyle of 19th-century Swiss nobility and serves as an important example of Louis XIII architectural revival in the region.

Practical

The château operates as a private residence with ongoing conservation efforts ensuring structural integrity and landscape maintenance, while the property includes various outbuildings such as farmhouses and the secondary residence Petite-Malvande, all protected under Swiss heritage legislation for their historical significance.

Did you know?

A notable natural landmark within the domain was the canton's tallest sequoia tree reaching nearly 50 meters in height, which was dramatically snapped by a 120 km/h wind gust in 1947, leaving its broken top visible from afar as a testament to the estate's natural history and the power of extreme weather events.
