Kossou Dam

The Kossou Dam is a hydroelectric power station built across the Bandama River, consisting of a concrete structure with turbines housed in the main building. The project created a vast artificial lake that stretches inland from the dam wall.

The dam was completed in the 1970s as a major infrastructure project that transformed energy production in the region. This development allowed the country to harness the river's natural flow for electricity generation.

The creation of Lake Kossou transformed local communities, establishing new fishing traditions and agricultural practices along its 178-square-kilometer surface.

The site is located near Yamoussoukro and can be reached by road, with viewing areas that provide good perspectives of the structure and reservoir. Access to certain sections may vary, so it is helpful to check local conditions before visiting.

The water level of the lake changes significantly with seasons and rainfall, creating different shoreline appearances throughout the year. These natural fluctuations affect how fishing and local activities adapt around the water body.
