Lac aux Caïmans, Crocodile sanctuary in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire
Lac aux Caïmans is an artificial lake with three interconnected zones surrounding the presidential residence and housing more than 200 Nile crocodiles in a protected environment. The different pools allow visitors to observe the animals across separate habitats.
The lake was created in the 1950s under President Félix Houphouët-Boigny as part of his vision to develop Yamoussoukro. This project became central to shaping the city's identity as a modern administrative center.
Local people regard the crocodiles as sacred guardians connected to traditional beliefs that have shaped their legal protection. This spiritual view influences how visitors approach and experience the site today.
Daily crocodile feeding occurs at 5 PM and can be safely watched from behind barriers with experienced guides providing information. Visitors should bring appropriate clothing and sun protection since the site is largely open.
