Lac aux Caïmans, Crocodile sanctuary in Yamoussoukro, Côte d'Ivoire
The artificial lake consists of three interconnected zones surrounding the presidential residence, housing more than 200 Nile crocodiles in their protected environment.
The lake was established in the 1950s under President Felix Houphouet-Boigny, who initiated the introduction of crocodiles as part of his vision for Yamoussoukro.
Local inhabitants consider the crocodiles as sacred guardians of the lake, reflecting traditional beliefs that have contributed to their legal protection status.
Visitors can observe the daily feeding of crocodiles at 5 PM GMT from behind security barriers, with experienced guides providing detailed information about the reptiles.
The lake serves both as a tourist destination and a conservation area, maintaining a substantial population of Nile crocodiles in an urban setting.
