Tsinghua University, Public research university in Haidian District, Beijing, China
Tsinghua University is a research and teaching institution in Haidian District, Beijing, China, set on expansive grounds with gardens and lakes. The site features modern laboratory buildings, traditional pavilions, and extensive green spaces linked by wide footpaths and cycling routes.
The institution was founded in 1911 with Boxer Indemnity funds and was intended to prepare Chinese students for studies abroad. After several decades, it evolved into a full university with independent research and teaching divisions.
Students from over a hundred countries study together on the grounds, giving the institution an international character felt throughout the campus. The library holds several million volumes and sees thousands of daily visitors who work in bright reading halls or quiet individual seats.
Visitors can explore the grounds on foot or use bicycles to move between different sections. The central green area offers shaded paths and quiet corners, while the western part is more densely built with research centers and lecture halls.
The grounds feature their own artificial lake from the early 20th century, lined with willows and stone bridges. During the winter months, the water partially freezes and attracts birds that rest among the bare branches.
