Yinxu is an ancient site in Anyang containing the remains of palaces, temples, residential areas, and burial grounds from the Shang Dynasty. The excavated grounds feature multiple zones where visitors can view bronze vessels, jade objects, and inscribed bones that reveal details about this lost civilization.
This site served as the capital of the Shang Dynasty from the 14th to 11th century BCE until its destruction by the rising Zhou Dynasty. Excavations began in the 20th century and have continuously revealed new understandings about early Chinese civilization.
The name Yinxu means "ruins of the Yin capital," referencing the ancient name for the Shang Dynasty. Visitors can observe through displayed objects how religious ceremonies and daily life were intertwined in this ancient society.
The site has a museum displaying bronze weapons, pottery, and inscribed oracle bones, with tours available in several languages. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the grounds are expansive and require walking between multiple excavation areas.
Among the tombs, excavators discovered the burial of Lady Fu Hao, a high-ranking woman with over 1,600 burial goods. The discovery demonstrates that women held important positions and were deeply honored in this ancient society.
