Description
Hefei is the capital of Anhui Province in eastern China and stretches along Chao Lake with wide boulevards and modern high-rises. The city lies between the Huai and Yangtze river plains and forms a commercial and transport hub in the central plain.
History
A small kingdom named Shu existed here between the 8th and 6th centuries BCE before the area fell to the Chu kingdom. During the Tang Dynasty the present city structure emerged and developed into a regional trading point between north and south.
Culture
The name comes from the Fei and Nanfei rivers, which merge here and give the city its classical sound. Many residents visit the teahouses around Bao Gong Park on weekends, where families gather and strollers rest beneath willow trees.

Visitors can best navigate the central city districts on foot or by metro, where street signs are marked in two languages. Spring and autumn offer mild temperatures and are the most comfortable seasons for a stay.
