Zhengzhou Shang City Site, Bronze Age archaeological site in Zhengzhou, China
Zhengzhou Shang City Site is a 3,500-year-old walled settlement whose inner city forms a near-rectangle with a perimeter of about 6,960 meters; the rammed-earth walls, built in a trapezoidal cross-section with clear horizontal lifts, stand up to 8 meters high on a base roughly 20 meters wide. Eleven gaps in the walls may mark gates, and in the northeast a 40-hectare palace zone contains rammed-earth platforms, including one building over 65 meters long, plus a 100-by-20-meter stone-lined reservoir. A black stone national-protection marker stands before a tan earthen slope.
The site was an early capital of the Shang Dynasty dating to around 1600 BC. Systematic excavations since 1950 have gradually revealed the history and importance of this early Chinese civilization center.
The site's name is tied to the Erligang culture, whose type site lies outside the great walls; Erligang-period bronzes cast here were heavier and technically more advanced than those of Erlitou. Workshops beyond the walls produced bone, pottery and bronze vessels, while a pit yielded the square ding with animal-mask and nipple motifs found in 1974. The Zhengzhou Shangdu Site Museum opened to the public on 26 July 2022.
The inner city walls run about 6,960 metres around a rectangle, but most of the ancient area lies beneath the modern city, so remains appear as scattered earthen wall segments and excavated foundations rather than a single open park. The black stone marker with the national protection inscription stands before one of the rammed-earth sections. The Shang City Site Museum opened in 2022, and the East Wall Site Museum, opened in 2023, displays a wall section and its cross-section.
The inner wall's cross-section is trapezoidal, with a base about 20 metres wide rising to roughly 8 metres; rammed layers vary from 3 to 20 centimetres. In 2021 heavy rain collapsed part of the rammed-earth wall, later shown to be protective covering rather than the original wall.
