Zhengzhou

Zhengzhou is a provincial capital in Henan Province in central China, where major railway lines converge and make the city a hub for national traffic. The urban area spreads across a wide expanse with residential neighborhoods, commercial districts, and parks along the Yellow River to the north.

The area served as a capital during the Shang Dynasty from the 16th century BC, where archaeologists uncovered workshops for bronze and pottery. The modern rise began in the early 20th century with the construction of the railway crossing between Beijing and Guangzhou.

The name means "earnest prefecture" and reflects the administrative role this place has held for centuries. The streets near the railway station show a mix of traditional food stalls and modern office towers, where commuters and travelers cross paths.

The metro network connects the main urban districts and Xinzheng Airport lies about 25 miles (40 kilometers) southeast of the center. English signage is present at major railway stations and transport hubs, but may be absent in side streets.

Excavations within the city limits uncovered an ancient city wall from Shang times, now surrounded by apartment blocks. The main railway station ranks among the busiest in China, connecting east-west and north-south routes in a single complex.
