Xinzhai

Xinzhai is an archaeological site near Xinmi with multiple layers of ancient settlements stacked on top of each other. The excavations have revealed pottery fragments, tools, and foundation remains that show how people lived in those times.

The site was discovered in 1979 and reveals settlements from the Xia dynasty period when the region was ruled by kings. The finds come from an important transition time between two major Bronze Age cultures.

The pottery and building styles here show how people adapted between two major cultural periods. The objects found, especially the vessels, reveal the habits and skills of those who lived here.

This is an active excavation site, so conditions can vary depending on the season and weather. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for limited shelter, as most of the area is open ground.

Among the finds is a small ceramic bird figure that is about 3800 years old and shows that people at that time could create artistic objects. This figure is a rare discovery that reveals much about the artistic abilities of the early Bronze Age.
