Haikou Meilan International Airport, International airport in Meilan District, Haikou, China
Haikou Meilan International Airport is a modern facility with two main terminals spanning around 450,000 square meters, designed to handle multiple airlines and flight operations. The complex features dedicated check-in zones, boarding areas, and parking spaces for aircraft across both buildings.
The airport opened in 1999 and replaced an older flying field that served the city before. The facility has undergone two major expansion phases, most recently with the construction of a new terminal wing in the past few years.
Chinese design elements and indoor gardens throughout the terminals create spaces that feel welcoming and give travelers room to breathe. Local restaurants serving Hainan cuisine are scattered across the buildings, offering visitors a taste of regional food before or between flights.
Plan to arrive at least two hours before your flight to allow time for check-in and security. The terminal is accessible by train, taxi, or airport buses, and note that WiFi may require a phone number to access.
One of the runways stretches 3,600 meters and is certified to handle the world's largest passenger aircraft, including the Airbus A380. This capability means the airport can operate a wide range of aircraft types.
