Dongzhai Port Nature Reserve, Coastal nature reserve in Haikou, China.
Dongzhai Port Nature Reserve is an extensive coastal strip with multiple bays, tidewater gullies, and dense mangrove forests that spread mainly across the southern section. The area covers 2500 hectares in total and provides varied habitats for wildlife throughout its landscape.
The area received protected status in 1980 and was added to China's tentative World Heritage list in 1996. This recognition acknowledged its ecological importance to the region.
Fishing has shaped this area for generations, and local fishers still work these waters using time-honored methods in designated zones. You can see how people and nature coexist in the daily rhythms of this coastal space.
Visitors can find observation points at several locations throughout the area to watch birds and explore the mangrove forests. Guided tours are a good way to experience the ecosystems and understand what you are seeing.
The reserve is home to 36 different mangrove species from 19 plant families, making it a remarkably varied habitat. This botanical richness supports hundreds of mollusk and fish species that live in its waters.
