Temple of Five Lords, Memorial shrine in Haikou, China
The Temple of Five Lords is a memorial shrine in Haikou featuring multiple buildings, including the Five Lords Ancestral Hall and the Sugong Memorial Temple. The complex spans across various buildings with traditional architectural features and displays of historical artifacts.
The temple was built during the Ming Dynasty to honor five officials from the Tang and Song dynasties who were exiled to Hainan. These exiles resulted from political conflicts in the imperial court.
The main hall displays stone statues of five officials, with calligraphic inscriptions reflecting how visitors honor their memory through reverent practice. Local people still come here to pay respects to these historical figures as part of their traditions.
The site is located in an accessible area with multiple entrances and is generally open during regular daytime hours. Visitors should allow time to explore the various halls and exhibitions at their own pace.
Two natural springs near the temple were created by Su Dongpo, an exiled poet, to help local residents obtain water. These springs remain as evidence of his practical contributions during his time on the island.
