Daowai Mosque, Islamic center in Daowai District, Harbin, China.
Daowai Mosque is a prayer house in the Daowai District of Harbin featuring two distinctive minarets, each rising five stories tall. The building showcases white and deep blue walls, with a main prayer hall of approximately 426 square meters.
Construction began during the Guangxu Emperor's reign in the Qing Dynasty and was completed in 1897. A major renovation and expansion took place in 2003.
The prayer spaces are arranged in three separate sections to serve different groups within the community. This layout reflects how the place has grown to welcome worshippers from many backgrounds.
The building is accessible by bus, with several routes running nearby and morning hours offering the best conditions for visiting. Visitors should be aware that prayer times are observed and respectful conduct is expected.
During Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, the spiral staircases within the minarets open to allow worshippers to observe the moon from a height of around 22 meters. Few visitors know about this practice, which offers a unique perspective on these celebrations.
