Well Sa-55
Well Sa-55 is a nationally protected cultural site in Daqing that marks where the city's first oil well was drilled. The location features informational displays and exhibits documenting the drilling process and the history of oil exploration in the region.
The well was drilled in 1958 near Yongyue Village and struck oil in 1959 after several months of intensive work, becoming the city's first successful oil source. It remained productive for decades until casing damage in 1988 led to its permanent closure, marking the end of its operational era.
The well holds special meaning for Daqing's people as a symbol of determination and industrial progress. Local stories celebrate the workers and technicians whose efforts made the oil discovery possible and shaped the region's identity.
The site is easily reached on foot via pathways around the location, allowing visitors to explore the history and landscape of the region. When visiting, prepare for cool and changeable weather and set aside time to read the explanatory plaques and displays.
The well was originally known as Songji Three Oil Well but is also called Iron Man One Well locally, a name reflecting the grit and strength of the workers who completed the project. This alternative name shows how the technical feat became linked with local values and human determination.
