Zhalong Nature Reserve

Zhalong Nature Reserve is a protected wetland spanning around 2,100 square kilometers of freshwater marshes, streams, and ponds that support more than 300 bird species year-round. The landscape features vast flat terrain dominated by reed beds and open water with scattered channels running through.

The reserve was established in 1979 and designated as a national protected area in 1987 to preserve wetland ecosystems and their bird populations. These actions made it a model for conservation efforts in the region.

The place holds designation as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance, protecting habitats for migratory bird species from around the world. This recognition reflects how communities value the land as a crucial stopover for birds traveling between continents.

The reserve can be reached by bus number 306 from Qiqihar city, with the journey taking about 40 minutes. Best observation conditions occur during early morning and late afternoon hours when bird activity peaks.

The reserve operates a specialized breeding program for red-crowned cranes and demonstrates these birds twice daily in designated viewing areas. This program lets visitors observe these rare birds closely while contributing to population recovery efforts.
