Mei Foo Sun Chuen, Private housing estate in Lai Chi Kok, Hong Kong.
Mei Foo Sun Chuen is a private housing estate in Lai Chi Kok in the Sham Shui Po District of Hong Kong. The development consists of 99 connected residential towers with thousands of apartments built in eight construction phases.
Construction started in the late Sixties on a site that formerly housed petroleum storage tanks. The project was the first large private housing development in Hong Kong and set new standards for middle-class living space.
The Chinese name means Beautiful View of Mobil Oil and recalls the site's former use by the petroleum company. Today the tall towers shape the skyline of Lai Chi Kok and serve as a landmark for visitors and residents.
The estate sits directly next to a metro station and is well connected to public transport. Shops, schools and leisure facilities are located within the development and are freely accessible to visitors.
The architecture followed concepts by Le Corbusier and became a model for later housing developments in the city. Every apartment includes a balcony, which was a special feature at the time and remains valued today.
