Old Tai Po Police Station

The Old Tai Po Police Station comprises three single-story buildings connected by a flat lawn area atop Wan Tau Tong Hill. The compound displays the typical layout of a colonial-era police barracks with distinct functional zones.

The station was established in 1899 as the first police headquarters in the New Territories, marking the start of British administration in the newly leased areas. This event signaled the beginning of organized control and order under European leadership in the region.

The site displays classic British colonial architectural details such as Dutch gables and ornamental window arches. These features show how European building styles were brought to Hong Kong and shaped the appearance of the region at that time.

The compound sits on a hilltop with good views over the surroundings and is accessible via Wan Tau Kok Lane. It now operates as an environmental center, so allow time to explore the different areas and learn about conservation practices.

The original guard house, an octagonal well at the entrance, and a brick incinerator on the lawn remain intact after more than 120 years. These visible remnants offer a direct glimpse into the daily operations of the station before modernization changed the landscape.
