Tai Po Lookout, Grade I historic residential building in Tai Po Kau, Hong Kong.
Tai Po Lookout is a colonial-style building erected in the early 1900s located in Tai Po Kau district. The residence features a distinctive tower structure that served as a water tower and provides views across Tolo Harbour.
Engineer Lawrence Gibbs designed and built this residence in the early 1900s as his private home. During World War II, the structure was commandeered by Japanese forces and used for harmful purposes.
The building gained new meaning when it became a space for people seeking care and support in the 1990s. Today it represents a shift from private residence to community-focused use.
The building sits on a hillside location that requires some walking from the nearest transportation point. It is best to wear comfortable shoes and visit during daylight hours when the paths are clearly visible.
The building first earned Grade II status in 1985 before later being raised to Grade I recognition. This progression shows how authorities recognized growing importance of the structure over time.
