Goddess of Democracy, Democracy monument at Chinese University, Hong Kong
The 6.4-meter bronze statue depicts a female figure holding a flame above her head, representing democratic values and freedom of expression.
The statue commemorates the events of June 4, 1989, when the original Goddess of Democracy was destroyed during the Tiananmen Square protests.
Annual gatherings near the statue served as a central point for Hong Kong residents to remember and honor those affected by the 1989 events.
The statue remained accessible to visitors at the Chinese University of Hong Kong until December 2021, when authorities ordered its removal.
Students transported the statue components by bicycle to avoid detection, assembling the monument piece by piece at its designated location.
