Jiangwan Village, Heritage village in Wuyuan County, China
Jiangwan is a village in Wuyuan County, Jiangxi, characterized by a winding river that flows from east to west through its center. The settlement is naturally framed by three mountains that form protective boundaries around the inhabited area.
The village was founded during the Tang Dynasty and became an important center of learning and influence over centuries. It produced 38 high-ranking officials, and numerous official residences from the Song through Qing periods survive within its boundaries.
The village preserves nineteen scholarly works and ninety-two literary compositions created by local families, with fifteen texts recognized in China's most authoritative collections. These writings reflect the intellectual standing and learned reputation that families built over centuries.
The village is open to visitors between 07:30 and 18:30 daily, with guided tours lasting about two hours to view the main buildings and spaces. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as exploring both the lower streets and elevated viewpoints requires moving through varied terrain.
The village layout forms the shape of the Chinese character 'An', which means peace, though this pattern is only visible when viewing the entire settlement from Back Dragon Mountain. Few visitors realize this intentional design aligns the village with philosophical principles of harmony and balance.
