Christ Church

Christ Church is a Protestant place of worship in Qingdao with distinctive Gothic features including pointed arches, stained glass windows, and a striking bell tower designed by architect Curt Rothkegel. The building displays early colonial-era European design with carefully crafted architectural details throughout its exterior and interior spaces.

Construction began in 1908 and was completed in 1910, funded by the German Governor's Office during Qingdao's colonial period. The building later experienced major changes, including decades of closure and eventual recognition as a site of national historical importance.

The church brings together people from different backgrounds who gather for worship and community events in shared spaces. It stands today as a place where locals and visitors experience how faith has shaped the city's social fabric.

The building is located on Jiangsu Road and welcomes visitors during multiple days of the week, with guided tours available that explain the architecture and historical context. It helps to check current opening times in advance and consider visiting early in the day to encounter fewer crowds.

The building was closed for more than 30 years before reopening to visitors and worshippers in 1980. This extended period of closure shows how the church endured major shifts in the city's history before becoming a gathering place once again.
