Jia Yi's Former Residence

Jia Yi's Former Residence is a traditional compound in Tianxin District with multiple buildings and courtyards, including a hall, stone inscriptions, and a well. The property demonstrates how educated households organized their living and working spaces during the imperial era.

The site originated during the Qing Dynasty and underwent major renovation work in the 16th century. Despite facing destruction from nearby fires, it survived as an important record of the region's past.

The residence is named after a prominent scholar from the Western Han period, and visitors can explore how educated households functioned during that time. The exhibition spaces reveal the intellectual life and influence that shaped thinking across generations.

The site is located in the older part of Changsha's center and works well to visit while exploring the surrounding historic streets. Coming in the morning or early afternoon helps you see the buildings and displays better in natural light.

The main well on the property was named after an official title and remains one of the few original features from the earliest period of the site. Many visitors walk past this functional structure without realizing it supplied water to the household for centuries.
