Young Mao Zedong Statue, Granite monument in Orange Isle, Changsha, China
The Young Mao Zedong Statue is a granite bust in Orange Isle Park, Changsha, showing the later revolutionary leader as a young man. The massive head rises with wind-swept hair and faces north across the Xiang River, surrounded by trees and walking paths.
The provincial government of Hunan began the project in 2007 and unveiled the finished work two years later. This island was chosen because the young revolutionary studied nearby and often walked along the riverbank here.
The base carries an inscription of a poem written in 1925, when the young revolutionary lived and studied in this city. These lines recall the years he spent by the Xiang River, reflecting on China's future.
The sculpture stands at the southern end of Orange Isle Park, which visitors can reach on foot from the mainland. A walk along the promenade offers good viewing points, especially from the northwest side.
The head weighs around 800 tons and was assembled from granite blocks quarried in Fujian Province. The hair is carved to show movement even though the material is solid.
