Tomb of Cai E, Military leader memorial in Yuelu District, China.
The Tomb of Cai E is a stone memorial on Yuelu Mountain in Changsha, Hunan Province. The site consists of a paved enclosure with a central stone burial mound, flanked by steles and inscriptions carved into the surrounding walls and pillars.
General Cai E led the military campaign that overthrew Emperor Yuan Shikai's attempt to restore imperial rule in 1915 and 1916. He died of illness in 1916 at the age of 34, just months after his forces prevailed.
The tomb sits at the foot of Yuelu Mountain, a place long connected to learning and remembrance in China. Locals still visit to pay their respects, and the space feels more like a living memorial than a frozen relic.
The site is on Yuelu Mountain and requires a short walk uphill from the base, with clear signs along the path. Morning or early afternoon visits tend to be quieter and give a better sense of the place.
Cai E was born in Hunan and studied as a young man at the nearby Yuelu Academy, which sits only a short distance from where he is now buried. This closeness between the place where he learned and the place where he rests is more coincidence than design, but it gives the visit an added layer of meaning.
