Anyuan Fort

Anyuan Fort is a coastal fortification in Ningbo with thick defensive walls, observation towers, and gun emplacements protecting the harbor entrance. The complex spreads across several levels with stone structures positioned to cover incoming vessels and control the waterway.

Built during the Qing Dynasty to defend Ningbo's harbor, the fort became strategically important in the late 1800s when foreign warships threatened coastal cities. The layout and gun positions reflect how China adapted its military defenses to face external maritime threats during that period.

The fort demonstrates how traditional Chinese building methods were adapted to military purposes along the coast. Today, visitors can observe how the design reflects both practical defense needs and local construction practices of that era.

The site is open to visitors during daylight hours with pathways connecting the main sections and viewing areas throughout the compound. Wear sturdy shoes as surfaces are uneven and some areas are steep, and bring water as there is limited shade in many spots.

Many original stone gun platforms and mounting brackets still stand intact, showing exactly how artillery was positioned and secured in the 1800s. Walking through these positions gives a clear sense of how soldiers operated the defenses day to day.
