Chunyang Gong, Taoist temple in Shanxi, China.
Chunyang Gong is a Taoist temple in Shanxi comprising five main buildings arranged along a central axis. The interior walls are covered with detailed paintings that span more than 1,000 square meters across these structures.
Construction of the temple began in 1247 during the Yuan Dynasty and took more than a century to complete. The elaborate murals adorning the various halls were created as part of this extended building process.
The walls display intricate Taoist artwork showing celestial beings, religious rituals, and everyday scenes from centuries past. These paintings give visitors a sense of how spiritual beliefs were expressed and integrated into daily life.
The temple was relocated about 20 kilometers northward in 1959 to prevent flooding from the Yellow River dam construction. The relocation effort preserved the site and made it accessible in its current location.
The Sanqing Hall contains around 280 detailed figure paintings depicting a gathering of Taoist saints. This extensive collection of portraits is one of the most notable features visitors encounter.
