Yen Chow Street Hawker Bazaar, Fabric market in Sham Shui Po District, Hong Kong.
Yen Chow Street Hawker Bazaar is an outdoor fabric market in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong, made up of rows of stalls packed tightly along narrow lanes. Rolls and folded bundles of cloth line the passageways from floor to ceiling, giving the whole place the feel of a textile maze.
The market opened in 1978 after the construction of the MTR Tsuen Wan line forced traders to leave their original location in Sham Shui Po. It grew into one of the main spots for fabric trading in the district and attracted vendors from across Hong Kong.
Many vendors speak both Cantonese and English, which makes shopping easier for visitors from different backgrounds. Fabrics are displayed openly on rolls and in folded piles, so buyers can touch and compare materials before making a decision.
The lanes are narrow and can get congested, so arriving earlier in the day gives you more room to move and browse. Bringing a bag to carry purchased fabric is helpful, as vendors do not always provide packaging for larger rolls.
The market is widely known by the nickname Pang Jai, a Cantonese term that loosely refers to shed-like stalls covered with simple awnings. This informal name is used throughout the neighborhood and is often more recognized than the official street name.
