Alster, River and artificial lakes in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

The Alster is a waterway with artificial lakes in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, flowing from the northern countryside into the heart of the Hanseatic city. Its course divides into two large basins that connect green spaces with urban waterfronts along its length.

In the late 12th century, the first dams appeared to power watermills and control the current. The basins took their present form over the following centuries and shaped urban development along the watercourse.

Locals gather along the grassy banks for afternoon picnics or row across the calm water in small boats rented near the shore. Joggers and cyclists follow the tree-lined paths that wind around both lakes throughout the day.

Boat rental stations sit at several points along the shore, offering rowboats and small sailboats for a trip on the water. Footpaths circle both basins completely, allowing a continuous walk without major obstacles.

White swans inhabit the waters year-round and receive care funded by the city, a practice dating back to the 16th century. Visitors often see the birds swimming in small groups near bridges or along quiet stretches of shore.
