Äußere Neustadt, Residential district in Dresden, Germany
Äußere Neustadt is a residential district in Dresden featuring restored buildings from the late 19th century, narrow alleys, and hidden courtyards between Albertplatz and Alaunpark. The streets show varied architectural styles from the period and create a mixed townscape.
This area developed from the 1870s outside Dresden's city walls and was originally called Antonstadt. The transformation from farmland to residential neighborhood happened during the city's industrial growth period.
The Kunsthof Passage connects five courtyards filled with artist studios, craft shops, and cafes that reflect the neighborhood's creative spirit. This artistic side defines the area today and attracts people interested in local creativity and handmade goods.
The district is accessible by trams 6, 11, and 13, which stop at multiple stations along Bautzner Straße and Rothenburger Straße. The flat terrain makes it easy to explore on foot or by bike.
The Pfunds Dairy shop has operated since 1892 and features roughly 3500 hand-painted Art Nouveau tiles covering the interior surfaces. The shop still looks like a decorated time capsule from the late 19th century.
