Berlin Schönefeld Airport, International airport in Schönefeld, Germany
Berlin Schönefeld Airport was an international facility in Schönefeld, southeast of Berlin, that operated until 2020. The complex included several terminals and processing areas spread across a large site.
The facility emerged after 1945 as a civilian airport for East Berlin and developed into the main gateway for travel between East Germany and other socialist countries. After reunification, operations continued until the modern capital airport project absorbed all functions.
The original terminal architecture displays the functional building style of the East German era, with plain facades and spacious halls. Visitors can still recognize how the socialist state designed its public buildings to convey efficiency and a sense of community.
The former facility sits beside the current main airport and remains accessible via S-Bahn lines that continue to serve the station. Visitors who wish to see the site should note that many areas have been repurposed or closed off.
The old terminal retained its interior fittings from the seventies until closure, including the original signage and seating benches. Some waiting areas still displayed the typical color schemes and materials of that era, which have long disappeared elsewhere.
