Zastler Hut, Mountain hut in Oberried, Germany
The Zastler Hut is a mountain hut located at roughly 1,256 meters above sea level in the Black Forest near Oberried, positioned below an ice-age cirque within the Feldberg Nature Reserve. The shelter offers overnight stays in shared dormitory rooms and is accessible only on foot.
The original cattle hut burned down in 1910 and was subsequently rebuilt by the Kirchzarten Forestry Office, reopening in June 1912 with improved facilities. This transformation marked the shift from its initial purpose to a guest shelter.
The hut grew from a simple cattle shelter into a meeting point where artists and nature enthusiasts from Freiburg gathered to explore the Black Forest mountains.
The hut is only reachable on foot and becomes challenging in bad weather, so warm clothing and sturdy footwear are essential for the trek. Seasonal operation from mid-May through October means visitors should confirm opening dates before planning a visit.
In December 2011, a major rockslide completely isolated the hut for six days, cutting off all access to the surrounding area. This event revealed how vulnerable the remote location can be to sudden natural forces.
