Holzminden

Holzminden is a town along the Weser River in Lower Saxony, tucked between forested hills about 70 kilometers south of Hannover. Streets run from the waterfront up into the slopes, and several bridges connect both banks of the river.

Count von Everstein granted town rights in 1245 after the settlement grew from the older village of Altendorf. Chemical firms arrived in the late 1800s, turning the place into a center for flavor and fragrance production.

The name derives from where the small Holzminder stream joins the Weser. Residents walk along the riverfront, and the market square serves as the central gathering point for weekly life.

The center is walkable, and parking areas are located near the waterfront. The university sits outside the center and is reached by steep lanes.

The town houses a museum of historic dolls and toys inside a timber-frame building from the early 1600s. Chemist Wilhelm Haarmann developed methods here for synthesizing vanillin, which shaped the region's industrial character.
