Hintersee

Hintersee is a mountain lake near Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden located at about 2,600 feet (800 meters) elevation in the Bavarian Alps. The water is surrounded by steep slopes and rock faces that rise directly from the shore.

The lake formed roughly 4,000 years ago when a massive rockslide separated boulders from the mountainside. This geological event reshaped the landscape and created a new body of water in the area.

The lake attracted painters in the 1800s who came to paint the surrounding mountain views. Artists like Carl Rottmann found inspiration in how light and shadows moved across the water and cliffs.

An electric boat called Annerl runs across the lake during summer months, providing a quiet ride without engine noise. Parking areas are available near the shore, though they can fill up during peak season.

The Zauberwald forest next to the lake contains unusual rock formations and wild-growing trees created by the ancient landslide. These strange boulders form a maze-like setting that surprises many visitors.
