Hintersee lake spans 900 meters in length and 180 meters in width, sitting at an elevation of 800 meters within the Bavarian Alps.
The formation of Hintersee occurred approximately 4000 years ago when a massive landslide caused boulders to separate from the mountain, creating the lake.
The area attracted numerous German painters in past centuries, including Carl Rottmann and Wilhelm Busch, who captured the mountain scenery in their works.
The electric boat Annerl provides transportation across the lake during summer months, while paid parking facilities accommodate visitors arriving by car.
The Zauberwald surrounding Hintersee contains unusual rock formations and wild trees, resulting from the ancient landslide that formed the lake.
