Zeche Hansa, Industrial heritage site in Dortmund, Germany
Zeche Hansa is a former coal mine in Dortmund with multiple preserved industrial buildings from the mining era. The complex includes a winding tower, machine halls, and distinctive steel structures that define the character of the mining site.
The mine was founded in 1856, initially struggled with water management, and began coal production in 1869. After severe damage during World War II, the complex was reconstructed and continued operating until its closure.
The site takes its name from a ship that symbolized the ambitions of its founders. Today it shows how miners and industrial workers lived and labored in this region.
The site is partially open to visitors and provides views of the original machinery and mining buildings. It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes, as paths across the grounds can be uneven.
The site features one of the oldest mine gas removal systems in Germany, tested here in 1947. This method later became the standard for safe methane management in mining regions across the country.
