Anebos Castle, Rock castle in Annweiler am Trifels, Germany.
Anebos Castle is a rock fortress on a sandstone ridge at approximately 480 meters elevation, with preserved wall sections and a historic water storage system. The complex spreads across the mountain crest and uses natural rock as a foundation for its defensive structures.
The fortress was the seat of the lords of Anebos from the early 12th century and was abandoned in the early 14th century. The inhabitants left voluntarily, leaving no traces of destruction or conflict.
The fortress was the seat of the lords of Anebos and represented their power in the region. Today the remaining structures show how a small noble family lived in this remote location.
The castle is accessible via marked trails through the Palatinate Forest, with parking available in Annweiler am Trifels nearby. The hike takes a few hours and the path is well marked in good walking condition.
Archaeological excavations since 2000 show that the inhabitants left the fortress completely undamaged. This mysterious peaceful abandonment of a noble stronghold remains puzzling to researchers.
