Schlössel, Medieval castle ruins in Klingenmünster, Germany
The Schlössel castle stands at 355 meters elevation on the southeastern part of Heidenschuh mountain, featuring remnants of a 5-meter-high ring wall.
Built around 1030 as an aristocratic fortress, the castle underwent three construction phases before its final destruction in the mid-12th century by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
Archaeological findings reveal advanced living standards with a stone-built kitchen, masonry oven, warm air heating system, and dedicated areas for nobility and servants.
Visitors can access the castle ruins via hiking trail number 6, which intersects with the outer earthworks at 322 meters elevation.
The castle's debris pile, reaching 6.5 meters in height after its destruction, preserved the foundation structures through centuries until their discovery in 1855.
