Schlössel

The Schlössel is a castle site at about 355 meters elevation on the southeastern slope of Heidenschuh mountain, with partial remains of its defensive and residential structures. The ruins show traces of a fortified compound with living quarters, service buildings, and fortification works.

The fortress was founded around 1030 and went through multiple construction phases before being destroyed in the mid-12th century. The destruction marked a turning point in the regional power struggles of that era.

The site shows traces of a wealthy noble family with separate spaces for lords and servants visible through archaeological finds. Remains of a stone kitchen and baking oven reveal details about the daily life and comforts available at this hilltop fortress.

The site is reachable by hiking trails in a forested hilly area. The ruins are exposed to the elements, so sturdy footwear and care on uneven ground are recommended when visiting.

After destruction, debris accumulated into a large mound that preserved the foundations for centuries until they were rediscovered in 1855. This layer of broken stone and earth allowed archaeologists to reconstruct the castle's interior layout and furnishings.
