Schierstein Bridge, Road bridge in Wiesbaden, Germany
The Schierstein Bridge is a 1,282-meter (4,206 ft) dual structure spanning the Rhine River and connecting Schierstein in Wiesbaden with Mombach in Mainz. It features multiple traffic lanes, wide pedestrian and cycling paths, and provides access points to the surrounding areas, including the nearby Rettbergsaue island.
The original structure opened in December 1962 and served as a major transportation link between Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate for over fifty years. In 2023, it was completely rebuilt and expanded to meet growing traffic demands.
The bridge carries the name of the Schierstein district and links two German states, making it a symbol of regional connection. Many people cross it daily to commute between Wiesbaden and Mainz.
Visitors on foot or by bicycle can use the wide western paths that provide safe crossing options. A staircase offers direct access to Rettbergsaue island and the surrounding green spaces.
The 2023 rebuilding project expanded capacity to six lanes and employed advanced engineering to handle tens of thousands of vehicles daily. The new design carefully balanced traffic needs with structural innovation for the region.
