Alt Rehse, Village district in Penzlin, Germany.
Alt Rehse is a village district in Penzlin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, situated near Tollensesee lake at approximately 60 meters above sea level. The locality spans roughly 9 square kilometers across this lake-dotted landscape.
The settlement originated in 1182 when Duke Bogislaw of Pomerania established it as 'Reze', derived from the Slavic word 'reka' meaning a place by water. This waterside foundation shaped the location's character throughout subsequent centuries.
The village center features 22 protected half-timbered houses with thatched roofs named after different German districts. These structures from the 1930s define the visual character of the place today.
The area is accessible by hiking trails from Neubrandenburg, by car, or via boat services across Tollensesee lake. Boat services typically operate from May through autumn when regular connections are available.
Between 1935 and 1939, the German Medical Association established a leadership school here that replaced most original buildings with an entirely new urban plan. This transformation fundamentally reshaped the place and made it an example of construction practices from that period.
