Altenbaumburg, Medieval castle ruin in Alsenz Valley, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.
Altenbaumburg is a castle ruin perched on a ridge above the village of Altenbamberg in the Alsenz Valley, in Rhineland-Palatinate. Sections of the outer walls, towers, and foundation structures are still standing on the site.
The castle dates to the 13th century, when it was built to control movement through the Alsenz Valley. It was gradually abandoned over the following centuries and fell into ruin, leaving the stone remains visible today.
The name Altenbaumburg likely refers to old trees that once covered the hill where the castle stood. The remaining walls and towers give a sense of how a hilltop fortress was arranged and used day to day.
The ruin is reached by hiking trails that run through the Alsenz Valley and the surrounding hills, open throughout the year. The ground is uneven and the slopes can be steep in places, so sturdy footwear makes the walk easier and safer.
Excavations at the site have turned up everyday objects, from tools to household items, that show what life inside the castle actually looked like. These finds have helped researchers piece together a picture of who lived here and how they spent their days.
