Altenburgwarte, tower near Quedlinburg, Germany
Altenburgwarte is a five-sided tower located on a hill about 700 meters southwest of Quedlinburg. Originally built in the 14th or 15th century, it was rebuilt in 1889 by the Harz Club with a spiral staircase of about 51 steps inside, rising roughly 10 meters high.
The tower was built in the 14th or 15th century as a watchtower and served as part of the medieval fortification system of the region. After deteriorating over centuries, it was restored in 1889 by the Harz Club and has since been designated as a protected cultural heritage monument.
The name Altenburgwarte combines the location on Altenburg hill with its function as a watchtower. Today, the area around it draws hikers and visitors who come to experience the views and connect with the region's past through this working landmark.
The tower is easily accessible from the town center via a walking path and comfortable shoes are recommended for the hike. Visit during clear weather to fully enjoy the views, as the site has no modern facilities and the panorama is the main attraction.
The original structure dates from the 14th or 15th century, but what visitors see today was completely reconstructed in 1889 using the old stone foundation blocks. This restoration transformed the ruins into a stable structure that continues to function as a landmark after more than a century.
