Tollensesee, lake in Germany
Tollensesee is a large lake near Neubrandenburg that stretches about 10 kilometers long and up to 2.5 kilometers wide, ranking among the clearest and cleanest lakes in the region. The water reaches depths of around 33 meters in its deepest point and is fed by several streams before flowing out through the Oberbach and Öhlmühlenbach into the Tollense river.
Since medieval times, Tollensesee has been an important waterway for the nearby city of Neubrandenburg and local communities. The two outlet streams Oberbach and Unterbach were deliberately created during this period and later formed the foundation of the modern Tollense river.
The lake takes its name from the Tollense river that flows from it and has shaped the region since medieval times. Today it serves as a gathering place where locals and visitors come together during warmer months for boating, fishing, and community water sports events along its shores.
A circular route of about 35 kilometers runs around the entire lake, connecting beaches, walking paths and viewpoints like Belvedere and Behmshöhe with easy access. Visitors can find multiple guarded beaches, a water sports center on the northeast shore with rental facilities and instruction, as well as regular boat services to explore different sections of the shoreline.
An artificially created island called Trümmerinsel sits near Neubrandenburg and provides an unexpected spot to explore. The first barrier-free bathing jetty in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is located at Augustabad beach with stairs and a pool lifter for improved accessibility.
