Spyker Castle

Spyker Castle is a three-story brick building with four round corner towers situated on the shore of Spyker Lake on Rügen Island. The structure stands within a landscaped castle park that surrounds the property.

The castle was built in 1318 by the von Külpen family from Stralsund. It later passed to Swedish Queen Christine, who granted it to Carl Gustav Wrangel in 1649, marking a significant shift in regional ownership and influence.

The interior rooms display ornate stucco ceilings from the 17th century that reflect Baltic architectural traditions. Visitors can observe these crafted details throughout the castle and understand how local artistic practices were expressed in the design.

The castle operates today as a hotel offering accommodation and modern amenities for guests. Visitors should note that access to certain areas may be limited to hotel guests, so it is worth checking in advance what is available to see.

The exterior walls are painted in Swedish Falu red, a uncommon color choice for buildings on Rügen Island. This distinctive shade rarely appears elsewhere in the region and reflects the property's historical Nordic connections.
