Sanssouci Park, Royal park in Potsdam, Germany
Sanssouci Park is a royal garden estate in the western suburbs of Potsdam that covers 300 hectares (741 acres). A central main avenue of 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) connects several palaces and leads through terraced fields.
Frederick the Great had this garden complex created from 1745 onward, combining French pleasure gardens with fruit cultivation areas. Later his successors expanded the grounds with additional buildings and plant collections into the 19th century.
Visitors walk along the vineyard terraces that combine fruit growing with garden design since the 18th century. On the south-facing steps, figs and grapes still ripen under glass today.
The grounds open daily from 8 AM until sunset, with several entrances around the estate. Parking areas are located near the historic windmill at the northern edge.
Over 230,000 plants are replanted twice a year by a team of 60 gardeners in the parterres below the palace. The color combinations change completely between spring and late summer.
