Querfurt

Querfurt is an urban municipality in Saxony-Anhalt that stretches across several districts with a long history as a castle town. The municipality today comprises nine separate settlements functioning as a single administrative unit.

The town served as capital of its own principality until 1496, when the ruling family line ended and power shifted to Saxony. This transition marked the end of its independent political existence.

The town's name comes from its medieval castle, which shaped the lives of residents for centuries. Today, old buildings and the layout of streets still reflect this castle-centered past.

The municipality sits at about 550 feet (168 meters) elevation and spreads across gently rolling terrain with several smaller settlements scattered throughout. Visitors should plan time to explore the different districts since they are spread out across the landscape.

The town produced Georg Muche, an important Bauhaus artist born in 1895 who later gained international influence in the art world. His connection to this major art movement reveals an unexpected aspect of the town's legacy.
