Detlev-Rohwedder-Haus, Office building in Mitte, Germany.
The Detlev-Rohwedder-Haus is an office complex in Mitte district housing the German Federal Ministry of Finance. The building features a long limestone and travertine façade with rows of regularly spaced windows facing Wilhelmstrasse and neighboring streets.
Construction took place between 1935 and 1936 to house the Reich Aviation Ministry under Hermann Göring. After the war, the building served as the House of Ministries in the German Democratic Republic and was later renamed after a West German politician.
The structure displays elements of 1930s German administrative architecture with travertine and limestone facades sourced from 50 different quarries.
The building stands along Wilhelmstrasse and can be viewed from the outside, as it typically remains closed to the public as an active government site. Nearby streets offer good views of the full length of the façade.
In June 1953, thousands of demonstrators gathered in front of what was then the House of Ministries to demand political change. The uprising marked one of the first major protests against communist rule in Eastern Europe.
