Auerbachs Keller, Historic German restaurant in Zentrum Leipzig, Germany
Auerbachs Keller is a restaurant spanning multiple levels with five distinct dining rooms, each named after historical figures or concepts like the Barrel Cellar, Luther Room, Goethe Room, Old Leipzig, and Large Cellar. The spaces are decorated with period furnishings and art that reflect different eras.
First documented in 1438, the establishment began as a wine bar under Heinrich Stromer, a medical professor and rector of Leipzig University. Over the centuries, it evolved into a gathering place for scholars and eventually became known throughout the region.
The murals on the walls depict scenes from Goethe's Faust and reflect the author's time as a student in Leipzig. Visitors can still see these images today and feel the literary history that runs through the place.
The restaurant is located in the Mädlerpassage on Grimmaische Strasse and opens daily from noon until 10 PM. The location within the covered passage system makes it easy to find, and the multiple dining rooms can accommodate groups of any size.
Paintings from the 1600s hang in the rooms showing the legendary figure of the magician Doctor Faust sitting with students or riding a wine barrel. These images testify to the deep connection between the place and the famous literary legend.
