Prora, Seaside resort complex in Binz, Germany
Prora is a building complex made up of eight identical blocks that stretch more than four kilometers along the Baltic coast. Each block has several stories with rooms that face toward the beach.
The organization Kraft durch Freude began construction in 1936 to create lodgings for twenty thousand workers. The Second World War prevented the project from ever being completed.
The documentation center shows how seaside holidays were organized and controlled as a tool for social influence in the nineteen thirties. Visitors can see exhibits that connect leisure planning with political aims of that era.
Some renovated sections now serve as apartments, holiday rentals, and a youth hostel with direct beach access. The site is freely accessible and you can walk along the buildings to experience their scale firsthand.
The reinforced concrete construction is among the longest building complexes in Europe, extending nearly five kilometers (three miles). Despite its size, most blocks remained empty for decades and gradually fell into decay.
